G ardening has been my passion for forty years, growing flowers, fruit and vegetables. I have grown exhibition vegetables and giant leeks most of my gardening life.
One of my greatest moments was meeting the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall at their home in Highgrove during the grand finals of the BBC ‘Great Village Show’. At this show I won the ‘heaviest leek’ competition and got the bug for growing giant vegetables. The following year I grew the world’s heaviest leek of 18lb 5oz.
I have been a regular winner at the Harrogate Show and have won the National Vegetable Society Show with my leeks on more than one occasion. I have won numerous open shows around our region and recorded two DVDs about growing exhibition leeks for the National Vegetable Society’s DVD library. I have also taken part in a video about growing leeks for the National Pot Leek Society.
