A bit about the JSN Leek…
I have bred a few leeks over a 40 year period and this is definitely the best one yet! This leek was bred from a Yorkshire giant mother plant which was pollinated from a fantastic quality cumbrian. The seeds were set on the 25th November 2014. Plants were then selected and grown on for planting out in late May 2015.
Two seedlings were selected, one for size which grew to 19″ around by 5″ in length. This leek had a flag width of 14″ and looked superb but did not have the right balance to win the quality shows. The other seedling made 17″ around by 4.5″ to the button by September 10th. On stripping flags off this plant, the button did rise, but very little.
This plant had everything I was looking for; straight barrel of pure white with no coarseness even with 4 flags removed, beautiful formation and colour of foliage with a very good flag count of 29 leaves, perfect balance and looked like a winner even as a seedling. The bed the seedling was raised in had no fertiliser added and the plants grew with no feed.
The larger plant did not survive the winter months which must have been an omen. So now my attention was on the 17″ seedling. This plant produced a very good seed head with a very strong stem which matured by autumn 2016. The head was shaved in late August and first grass was taken on the 8th October. Plants were selected and shared with friends.
Scott Hall only grew 5 of the new leek and went on to win The National Pot Leek Society Championships 2017! My congratulations to Scott who did the leek proud! His winning stand was said to be the best quality leek for many years. This has been replicated for another year in 2018! Well done Scott!
This leek was 4th in the National Championships for Brian Boucher in 2019 due to the high quality of the leek.
